POSITION:  Bus Driver, Disabled Students

 

LOCATION:  Transportation Department

 

OPEN TO:  Employees of Carson City School District and external applicants.

 

APPLICATION PERIOD:  Closes January 3, 2019, or until filled.

 

SALARY and BENEFITS:  Grade 19.  Range begins with Step 1 = $14.10 per hour.  5.00 hours per day, 181 days per year with benefits according to the classified negotiated agreement. Employer-paid retirement, health and life insurance, sick leave benefits and personal leave.  A new classified employee may receive up to a maximum of five (5) years of previous outside work experience.  The prior position must be similar in nature and written verification of employment from the previous employer must be submitted to Human Resources upon employment. Per Administrative Regulation No. 311.1.

 

NOTE:  This position is strictly contingent upon sufficient funding, and student enrollment.  During the training period the trainee will be a temporary employee and will not be entitled to any benefits except FICA and Workman's Compensation Insurance.  After successful completion of the training and licensing period, trainee would become a regular probationary employee and will be eligible for benefits according to the classified negotiated agreement.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:  Graduation from high school or the equivalent.  A typical qualifying entrance background is completion of formal or informal training in school bus operations, first aid, and completion of course work in disabilities of youth and respective procedures or a closely related field; or one (1) year of experience performing the duties of school bus driver for disabled passengers; or one (1) year of experience at or equivalent to experience as a School Bus Driver for the Carson City School District, wherein the incumbent has acquired the knowledge and abilities listed below. Bilingual preferred.

 

Must be able to pass the pre-employment drug screen, physical, and lift test.

 

This is a replacement position.

General Job Description:

Under general supervision operates a school bus and/or other passenger vehicle transporting disabled students; to be responsible for the care and well being of disabled students while riding on a school bus and/or passenger vehicle; to perform simple bus maintenance as required; and to perform related work as required.

 

Experience or training required:

Knowledge of:  Provisions of the Nevada Motor Vehicle Code and the Nevada Educational Code applicable to the operation of vehicles in transporting disabled students; operation of a bus and passenger vehicle; types of disabilities and the procedures for caring for each disability while on the bus or passenger vehicle; record keeping as required with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Public Law 101-476 and driving duties; appropriate safety precautions and procedures.

 

Ability to:  Maintain vehicles in a clean a safe condition; responds appropriately to special needs and emergencies involving disabled passengers; performs first aid as required; can spontaneously rearrange routes and schedules to meet the needs and requirements of their disabled students and communicates these changes to Parents, Supervision and Special Services immediately; maintains detailed records accurately as required; operates vehicles maintaining and observing legal and defensive driving practices; understand and carry out detailed oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective proactive relationships with those contacted in the course of work; insures ADA provisions and practices are adhered to in the relationship of their work.

 

Any combination of training, education, and experience, which demonstrates an ability to perform the duties of the position:  Graduation from high school or the equivalent.  A typical qualifying entrance background is completion of formal or informal training in school bus operations, first aid, and completion of course work in disabilities of youth and respective procedures or a closely related field; or one (1) year of experience performing the duties of school bus driver for disabled passengers; or one (1) year of experience at or equivalent to experience as a School Bus Driver for the Carson City School District, wherein the incumbent has acquired the knowledge and abilities listed above.

 

Licenses or Certificates required:

Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent certificate, a valid Nevada Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a passenger endorsement, a standard First Aid/CPR Certificate, and an original Social Security Card.  Desired would include a Third Party Certification Training Certificate that would enable holders to authorize the driving abilities for licensing purposes as administrated by the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles and Public Safety.

 

The Job Functions:

Positions in this class operate an assigned bus having the equipment to accommodate the transportation of the assigned disabled students to their specific route.  Incumbents work cooperatively, proactively and closely with Special Services, Supervision and Attendants giving suggestions and direction as needed.  Positions in this class perform work, which allows or requires choice in the application of methods or procedures to ensure the safety and comfort of disabled students.  Incumbents have significant latitude in selecting routes and schedules, work will be reviewed periodically for final results.  Incumbents are expected to refer matters, which exceed the capacity of the equipment or training of the driver to the Transportation Supervisor for instruction.

 

Essential Job Functions:

Drives a District bus or passenger vehicle, transporting disabled students and attendants, as authorized; establishes, maintains, communicates and modifies as needed the route and schedule to transport disabled students from home or institution to school and return; communicates with Parents, Supervision, and Special Services regarding schedules, passenger requirements and services performed by driver-attendant team; alters schedules and routes proactively to insure response to passenger needs and emergencies; maintains knowledge of general disabilities prevalent in passengers and the procedures to cope with such disabilities and special needs; assists students onto bus using stairs and hydraulic lift; adjusts, extends and collapses wheelchairs, walkers, body braces, infant seats, and other specialized orthopedic equipment; assists students from home to bus and from bus to class; inspects bus or vehicle for safety purposes; drains air brakes; keeps vehicles clean and reports any mechanical defects; keeps detailed records and reports as directed; may assist with driver training; performs minor vehicle maintenance; operates District vehicles and school buses; maintains requirements such as medical certificates and appropriate licenses; must keep and insure a high degree of confidentiality regarding student disabilities and conditions; incumbents must be able to remain calm, effective and proactive while coping with gross motor dysfunction's, including bodily and mental disabilities; and performs related work as required.

 

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

Strength:  Heavy Work  -  Lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling 100 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.  Incumbent must be in good physical condition and must take a periodic physical examination. May work in conditions of dust, fumes, gas, odors, heat and cold. May be required to wear a back support.
