POSITION:  Para Professional I - Pre-Kindergarten

 

LOCATION:  Empire Elementary School

 

OPEN TO:  Employees of Carson City School District and external applicants.

 

APPLICATION PERIOD:  Closes December 26, 2018, or until filled.

 

SALARY & BENEFITS:  Grade 16.  Range begins with Step 1 = $12.23 per hour.  6.00 hours per day, 181 days per year with benefits according to the classified negotiated agreement. Employer-paid retirement, health and life insurance, sick leave benefits and personal leave.  A new classified employee may receive up to a maximum of five (5) years of previous outside work experience.  The prior position must be similar in nature and written verification of employment from the previous employer must be submitted to Human Resources upon employment. Per Administrative Regulation No. 311.1.

 

NOTE:  This position is strictly contingent upon sufficient PDG grant funding, and student enrollment.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:  Graduation from high school or the equivalent.  A typical qualifying entrance background is completion of formal or informal training in basic instructional techniques, or a closely related field, or experience performing student behavior supervision work.  Must have an Associates Degree or completion of two (2) years of study at an institution of higher education (verified by official transcript) or pass the state-approved academic proficiency test (Para Professional Assessment). All applicants must meet all highly qualified requirements pursuant to No Child Left Behind (NCLB) regulations. Bilingual preferred.

 

Must be able to pass the pre-employment drug screen test.

General Job Description:

Under supervision, to assist teachers in classroom operations; to instruct regularly placed students individually and in small groups; to perform clerical duties; and to perform related work as required.

 

Experience or training required:

Knowledge of:  General needs and behavior of children; correct English language usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation; operation of standard office equipment; phonics and basic reading principles; record keeping techniques.

 

Ability to:  Perform routine clerical work; make mathematical calculations with speed and accuracy; learn to operate specialized office equipment; maintain routine records accurately; work with individuals and small groups of students; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices; establish and maintain effective proactive relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

The Job Functions:

Positions in this class are established principally to relieve teachers of certain instructional tasks and routine details, which are non-instructional in nature.  Incumbents perform their tasks with some independent judgement within a limited number of standardized procedures.  In addition to, or in lieu of, classroom assignments, incumbents may be assigned to any school program.  Para Professional I incumbents are distinguished from other Para Professional classes in that they work under the direct supervision of a teacher providing instructional support in a regular classroom.

 

Essential Job Functions:

Listens to and drills students in reading, spelling, mathematics and other subjects according to instructions and guidance from a teacher; performs a variety of routine clerical and record keeping activities, such as taking roll, collecting monies, filling out forms and applications and correcting papers; observes activities of students and assists teacher in maintaining order; sets up and arranges supplies and equipment in classroom for student use; prepares labels, charts, bulletin boards and displays as instructed; decorates classrooms, administers make-up tests; operates various office equipment, such as typewriter and copier; operates audiovisual equipment; observes and records students’ behavior and other significant data; runs errands for teacher; counts, records, dispenses and shelves books and instructional materials; administers and corrects tests; may be responsible for a small elementary library; demonstrates use of teaching aids to students; prepares instructional aids, such as tapes, games, worksheets and displays; assists students in use of library and special centers; monitors and records pupil progress on taped lessons; checks, records and informs teacher on progress or problems; checks reading and instructional materials in and out to students; maintains discipline and order among students; as instructed, arranges and decorates assigned area; and performs related work as required.

Strength:  Light Work  -  Lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling up to 25 pounds maximum.
