POSITION: Director of Nutrition Services
LOCATION: Nutrition Services

SALARY & BENEFITS: Grade 28. Range begins with Step 1 = $21.92 per hour. 8.0 hours per day, 12 months per year with benefits according to the classified negotiated agreement. Employer-paid retirement, health and life insurance, sick leave benefits and personal leave. A new classified employee may receive up to a maximum of five (5) years of previous outside work experience. The prior position must be similar in nature and written verification of employment from the previous employer must be submitted to Human Resources upon employment. Per Administrative Regulation No. 311.1.

General Job Description:
Under direction of the Director of Operations, the incumbent is to lead, plan, schedule, and coordinate the District-wide school Nutrition program; and to perform related work as required.
Experience or training required:
Knowledge of: Principles of good nutrition including federal standards; procedures and equipment used in preparation, cooking and serving of food in a school setting; food values, proper food combinations and economical substitutions; preparation of foods which will be attractive to students; principles of leadership, supervision and personnel management; related safety precautions and procedures; standard food service practices and regulations associated with industry standards of cleanliness and sanitation; nutrition wellness, (NSLP) National School Lunch Program, (SBP) School Breakfast Program, (BIC) Breakfast in the Classroom, (ASSP) Afterschool Snack Program, (CACFP) Child and Adult Care Food Program, (SFSP) Summer Feeding Program and help with processing Free and Reduced Meal Applications.
Ability to: Schedule work and utilize departmental personnel effectively; assist in the direction of the operation of school cafeteria food production in a decentralized cafeteria serving operation, including selection and training of managers and other personnel, use of foodstuffs, safety, sanitation, and serving; prepare menus affording a balanced diet for students of varying ages; use modern office equipment including a computer with the associated office software, photocopier, telephone, fax machine, calculator, etc.; operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective proactive relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Any combination of training, education and experience, which demonstrates an ability to perform the duties of the position: Associate’s Degree in a specific or related field plus 2 years of relevant school nutrition experience is required. A Bachelor’s Degree in a related field with related experience is preferred.
Licenses or Certificates Required:
Serv-Safe Manager Certificate, a valid driver’s license issued by the state of residence, and an original Social Security Card.
The Job Functions:
With Food Services Management Consultant (FSMC), assist with planning menus and nutritional programs on a District–wide basis and perform the more complex cafeteria program duties. The incumbent will exercise supervision over food service personnel, making assignments, setting priorities, training, and reviewing the work of subordinates. Assists with and facilitates improving the Nutrition Services climate and culture, along with any related professional development initiatives. Incumbents are responsible for processing complaints at their level, recommending employment and effectively recommending disciplinary action. Incumbents have considerable independence in selecting work methods and are expected to resolve problems confronted through the application of judgement and precedent. Collaborate with site administration and FSMC on annual appraisals of Cafeteria Managers. Director will be the direct liaison to FSMC and attend monthly invoicing meetings and quarterly and annual reviews along with leadership and menu planning committees.
Essential Job Functions:
Coordinate the organization, staffing and operational activities of the Nutrition Services program including State and Federal record keeping and reporting; participate in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for the Nutrition Services program; identify resource needs and recommend and implement policies and procedures; supervise, train and evaluate the performance of food service personnel; recommend the selection, promotion, discipline and termination of personnel working in the Nutrition Services Department; counsels employees and processes complaints; meet with staff to identify and resolve problems; establish standards of performance; prepare schedules, assignments and budgetary data; check and correct work in progress; assist food service staff with computer program issues; set standards for quantity and quality of food prepared and served; assist and advise District Personnel and FSMC in procuring Nutritional Services’ foods and supplies; maintain records of federal nutritional standards and ensure that menus comply with standards; review duties and work schedules of employees; prepare periodic performance reports; review and approve time and absence records; administer substitute program; Participate in the development and administration of the Nutrition Service budget; forecast additional funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies; consult with principals of schools regarding cafeteria needs and promote use of the cafeterias by students; coordinate and assist with selection of foods and supplies, and coordinate and check for their proper storage and efficient use; prepare menus, check for dietary balance, nutritional adequacy and use of foods in plentiful supply; plan for the safe and efficient use, care, maintenance and repair of equipment; participate in collegial and professional group meetings and community activities relating to the school cafeteria program; review the Free and Reduced Price Meal applications and determine eligibility; prepare reports and maintains records; coordinates organization of special dinners and banquets; operate District vehicles; and performs related work as required. Coordinate and take lead role within the Nutrition Wellness and Nutrition Advisory Committees. This position works very closely with contracted Food Services Management Consultant and the Operations Services Department as an essential team member. The incumbent will represent the District at Board meetings and related events.
