POSITION:  School Social Worker (SSW)/Safe School Professional (SSP) - Remainder of the Year Only

 

LOCATION:  Seeliger Elementary School

 

LICENSE:  All District Social Workers will be required to have a School Social Worker endorsement from the Nevada Department of Education or acquire the license by the end of the 2018-2019 School Year. 

  • Must possess a license issued by the Nevada Board of Examiners for Social Workers - a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW) or Licensed Social Worker (LSW) or; 
  • Possess a Social Work, MFT, Psychology, Mental Health or Counseling Degree or;
  • Meet the criteria as designated as a State of Nevada as a Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP) or Qualified Mental Health Associate (QMHA).

SALARY & BENEFITS:  All School Social Workers will be placed on one of the two fixed salaries contingent upon grant funding: (a) Licensed Social Worker (LSW) - $47,000.00 ; (b) Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) - $62,000.00.  Employer-paid retirement, health and life insurance, sick leave benefits and personal leave. 

 

Bilingual preferred.

Job Goal and Purpose:

The School Social Worker (SSW), called Safe School Professionals (SSPs) at their school sites, promotes and enhances the overall academic mission by providing services that strengthen home, school and community partnerships and address barriers to student learning and achievement. The SSW will contribute to the development of a healthy, safe and supportive environment which is achieved by advancing the understanding of the emotional and social development of children and influences of family, community and cultural differences on student success. 

 

General Job Description and Performance Responsibilities:

The SSW’s principal task is to empower students, families and school personnel to access available opportunities and resources that develop each student’s educational potential. SSWs will concentrate on students’ academic, behavioral and emotional needs and will provide services, support, advocacy, intervention and resources that will help to empower students to increase their academic potential.

 

The SSW will interface with the educational process and meet the needs of schools, students, and families in the Carson City School District. Using a strengths-based, tiered and system-wide approach, SSWs focus on prevention and intervention by facilitating engagement between schools, families, and the community. SSWs address the District’s Strategic Plan imperatives by providing services to students and families, linking children, youth, and families to community agency resources, and aligning services to meet the educational needs of all students. The SSW will be expected to adhere to the Carson City School District School Board Policies and Regulations. The SSW will report to the School’s Principal or Vice Principal onsite. This person will also adhere to requirements and practices set forth by the State of Nevada’s Department of Education.

 

School Social Workers work very closely and collaborate/partner with school counselors.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The SSW’s essential job duties and responsibilities will include, but may not be limited to:

 

IMPLEMENTING AND ADHERING TO THE THREE-TIERED LEVEL OF INTERVENTION AND SUPPORT FOR THE SCHOOL, STUDENTS, AND FAMILIES

  •  Tier 1 – This is universal or school-wide interventions (not specific to just one student or a group of students) based on a “prevention” model. This tiered intervention pertains to reaching at least 80 to 100 percent of the entire school utilizing proven Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) strategies and programming– this involves not only SSWs involved with students, but with all school staff, including teachers and school counselors, as well.  Examples of Tier 1 interventions and supports include, but are not limited to, interacting and building relationships on an ongoing basis with students, collaborating/training with teachers, substance abuse and prevention programs, anti-bullying programs, school safety, afterschool programing, school-wide needs assessment, and data collection and reporting, etc. 
  • Tier 2 – This is intervention that may be targeted towards a small group of students or families, in terms of small group interventions with like needs. This typically will affect about 10 to 15 percent of all students and/or families. Examples of Tiered 2 interventions/supports include, but are not limited to, identifying students and/or families needing anger management, case management, classroom interventions, focused attendance and truancy interventions, etc.
  • Tier 3 – This is intensive supports that may affect approximately five (5) to 10 percent of students in a particular school. Tier 3 interventions typically may include, but not be limited to, law enforcement involvement/intervention, students who need the services of a school psychologist, mental health therapy, behavioral intervention plans (BIPs), intensive family work, home visits, child protective services involvement/reporting, suicide screenings, etc.

Assessment of Student, Family, and School Needs:

  • Conducts, coordinates or uses assessments to develop appropriate interventions for students, families and schools.
  • Uses student, family and school assessment results to identify needs that affect student learning.
  • Develops and applies long and short term intervention plans consistent with curriculum, student needs, strengths and social and emotional factors.
  • Uses a variety of appropriate formal and informal tools and techniques including observation and motivational interviewing to evaluate the needs, progress and performance of students and families.

Direct Services/Service Delivery: 

Promotes family support of students’ learning experience within the context of multicultural understanding and competencies.

  • Provides series to students in ways that build upon individual strengths and offers students maximum opportunities to participate in the planning and direction of their own learning experiences.
  • Develops and provides training and educational programs that addresses the goals and mission of the school.
  • Assist teachers with behavioral management and intervention.
  • Meets individuals with students and offers appropriate intervention and supports, based on student needs.
  • Based on case-by-case needs, conduct home visits and meets with families.

Advocacy:

  • Advocates for appropriate services for students and families, including but not limited to academic, educational, medical, social, emotional and behavioral.
  • Assists students and families in gaining access to community resources.
  • Utilizes current research, technology and other resources to assist students, families, schools and communities in developing life skills necessary to be successful. 

Consultation and Collaboration:

  • Consultant with principals, teachers, school counselors and nurses on issues such as attendance, mental health, behavioral management, crisis intervention, homelessness, child abuse and neglect, etc.
  • Initiates and supports activities to overcome institutional barriers in gaps and services as leaders and members of interdisciplinary teams.
  • Promotes collaboration among and access to service providers, which may include but not be limited to community health, mental health, addictions, juvenile justice, child welfare and faith-based agencies.
  • Assist the district’s special projects coordinator with McKinney-Vento Students in Transition, and Food for Thought Programs in their schools.

Planning, Implementation, and Evaluation:

  • Develops, maintains and monitors written plans that encourages student success.
  • Plans or participates in the development of system-wide programs to promote a safe, healthy and caring school climate.
  • Assists the school and the community in planning programs to mitigate situations that may interfere with the learning process of students.
  • Assists in the evaluation of effective departmental, school-based, system and community programs.
  • Works to implement School Social Work programs and requirements set forth by the Nevada Department of Education.
  • Participates in the Nevada Educator Performance Evaluation System (NEFP) Evaluators

Professional Requirements:

  • Conforms to the standards set by the National Association of Social Work (NASW) Code of Ethics.
  • Maintains and keeps current license through the Nevada Board of Examiners for Social Workers at all times.
  • Obtains and maintains School Social Work Endorsement through the Nevada Department of Education (must be obtained no later than June 30, 2019)
  • Adheres to the requirements set forth for School Social Workers by the Carson City School District.
  • Participates in appropriate professional development activities to improve knowledge and skills.
  • Maintains accurate case records and documentation.
  • Works to address the requirements set forth by the Office for a Safe and Respectful Learning Environment (OSRLE) with Nevada Department of Education’s (NDE)
  • Works to obtain the NDE’s School Social Work Endorsement
  • Perform other duties related to the position, as assigned.

Position Requirements:

An eligible School Social Worker for Carson City School District (CCSD) employment is defined as a:

  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
  • Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW)
  • Licensed Social Worker (LSW)
  • Marriage and Family therapist (MFT)

 

Education and Training:

School Social Workers must possess a Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW), Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) or Mental Health Counseling or Psychology, from a college or university accredited by degreed profession’s accreditation body.

 

Licenses and Certifications (once degreed):

  • Must possess a School Social Worker endorsement as specified by the Nevada Department of Education.
  • Must possess a license issued by the Nevada Board of Examiners for Social Workers - a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW) or Licensed Social Worker (LSW).
  • Must possess a Social Work, MFT, Psychology, Mental Health or Counseling Degree.
