LICENSE:  K-8 Endorsement and/or Language Arts Endorsement, TESL preferred

General Job Description:

Under the collaborative supervision of the Educational Services Department and school principal, this position is responsible for designing, conducting, promoting, and supporting teacher professional development programs associated with the District’s Elementary School English Language Arts Program. The Intervention Specialist hired for this position is primarily responsible to support development of high quality instructional practices that meet the educational needs of all learners. In order to meet the expectations associated with the position the Intervention Specialists must provide professional support to the individual classroom teachers and building administration through coaching and targeted professional development. In addition the Intervention Specialist will facilitate the development of a guaranteed and viable curriculum in order that all learners have clear learning targets and unit level assessments that effectively measure student progress. This would include proficiency in student data systems like Mastery Connect, Member Center, and NWEA-MAP tools. The Intervention Specialists will provide services in the areas of curriculum, instruction, and assessment as part of the work they perform at site and District level programming.  The Intervention Specialist will also facilitate the Success For All Foundation – SFA programming, processes, and integration.

 

Experience &/or Training Required:

 

  • A minimum of 5 years classroom instruction experience required.
  • District, departmental, and campus policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of high quality staff development projects.
  • Knowledge and ability to apply Nevada State Standards for Professional Development.
  • Working knowledge of current public education programs and trends.
  • Ability to design and deliver research based high quality professional development projects.

Ability to:

The Intervention Specialist must be able to identify and develop site-based professional development opportunities identified in the school performance plan and District Strategic Plan. Intervention Specialist must be able to develop District-wide literacy tools, curriculum guides and benchmark assessments to improve student achievement. In addition the Intervention Specialist must be able to effectively work with administrators, teachers, and paraprofessionals to design and create professional development opportunities that lead to significant improvement of school and classroom practices. These professional improvements should eventually lead to high functioning students within each classroom.

Licenses or Certificates Required:

Possession of a valid Nevada Teaching License, TESL and/or Reading, and/or Literacy endorsement preferred, Master’s degree preferred, a valid drivers’ license issued by the state of residence, and an original Social Security Card. Reading or writing specializations preferred. Understanding of formative and summative assessment. The Job Functions:

The ELA Intervention Specialist will work closely with the school administration, district office personnel and SFA to produce the most effective training opportunities. Job responsibilities will include creation of professional development opportunities related to curriculum, instruction, and assessment, all of which promote the development of high quality teaching and learning opportunities.

 

Essential Duties and Job Responsibilities:

 

Coaching and Adult Staff Development:

  • Demonstrate the ability to implement staff development initiatives from start to finish
  • Ability to utilize the four cognitive coaching stances (coaching, collaboration, consultation, and evaluation) to support adult changes in practice
  • Effectively applying Nevada State Standards for professional development as a guide to produce, implement, and evaluate staff development initiatives.
  • Must be able to follow district directives in implementing this initiative including working with administrators, teachers, and paraprofessionals.
  • Support teacher growth in implementing SFA and literacy in all content areas to enable achievement for all students through regular classroom observations and teacher feedback sessions.
  • Provide collaborative support to teachers through problem solving, modeling lessons, scheduling opportunities for peer observations, and conducting mini-training sessions.
  • Sustain staff’s growth in ELA instruction and integration by providing or coordinating monthly and quarterly network meetings.
  • Understand and facilitate PLC work. Must be able to observe, gather data, and coach individuals and teacher teams on PLC processes. Must be familiar with the PLC protocols.
  • Maintain a positive working relationship with faculty as a mentor and coach, not as an evaluator.
  • Assess and monitor student growth through the collection, disaggregating, and dissemination of formal and informal assessment data, with a particular emphasis on supporting and placing ELL and special education students in the appropriate groups. Ideally this is done through SFA’s Member Center website.
  • Increase staff curriculum and assessment literacy and implementation.
  • Participate fully with district-wide curriculum mapping and assessment development.
  • Participate fully in curriculum and assessment academies.
  • Fidelity with the collection and data input for SFA’s Member Center website and Mastery Connect.
  • Facilitate and organize the quarterly assessment process as well as the regrouping of students and determination of tutoring needs based on students’ reading mastery. Track student achievement data, maintain and organize student achievement data, Reading group assignments, Reading group rosters, Tutoring schedules and assignments.  Reading mastery levels are tracked quarterly using the Grade Summary Form.
  • Manage and maintain inventory of all SFA program materials.
  • Active member of the School Leadership Team and invests time with the Solutions Network. May include, but not limited to site intervention programs such as tutoring and other remediation opportunities.
  • Monitor program implementation and ELA integration within Math and Science at the individual school sites.
  • Communicate all student progress with parents, staff, other school leaders, District Educational Services Department and SFA.
  • Monitor student achievement and programming to ensure that every child is making adequate progress.
  • Supervise, manage, and schedule all tutors.
  • Communicate and coordinate program with other Intervention Specialists.
  • Prepare student achievement data and communicate regularly with SFA Point Coaches regarding program implementation with fidelity.
  • Develop an in-depth understanding of all program components and their theoretical underpinnings, fully participating in all SFA trainings, Leadership Academies, and professional development opportunities. Fully participates and prepares for each SFA support visit and training.

Content Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of MAP assessment and Descartes. Must be able to navigate website, download data, and provide instruction to others on gathering data and using data to provide instructional interventions.
  • Knowledge of state writing traits and corresponding rubrics.
  • Knowledge of state mandated exams and data associated with those exams. Must be able to support teachers across content areas to utilize this data to support student learning in each classroom.
  • Learner-Centered mindset to support unit design and development. This includes establishing learning targets, SMART goals, and assessment development.
  • Knowledge of the co-teaching model to provide services to ESL and special education students. The Carson City School District utilizes this model to provide services and the Intervention Specialists must understand these practices and be able to support teacher teams as they do this collaborative classroom work.
  • A deep understanding of best practices including differentiated instruction to meet the needs of special populations including IEP and LEP subgroups.
  • The candidate must be highly skilled in the area of differentiated instruction and the Instructional Consultation (IC) model.
  • Knowledge of Content area literacy and strategies that can be used by teachers to allow students of various reading levels to interact with the text.

 

Professional Integrity:

  • The students of the school must come first. The stance of the Intervention Specialists must be founded in student performance and supporting the change in adult behaviors which ultimately lead to students improving their academic performance in all areas.
  • The Intervention Specialists at each site must be able to support the change process and follow district directives when implementing the ELA programming at the elementary school level.

 

General Information:

  • Intervention Specialist might be expected to work additional days.
  • The Intervention Specialist will operate under a flexible start schedule that will require them to work a 7.5 hour day, but the start time will vary based on daily responsibilities.
  • The Intervention Specialist will be selected by district office and site level personnel.
  • The Intervention Specialist must demonstrate the ability to improvise and make adjustments in order to meet the staff development needs of site staff members.
