POSITION:  Utility Custodian

 

LOCATION:  Operations Department

 

OPEN TO:  Employees of Carson City School District and external applicants.

 

APPLICATION PERIOD:  Closes March 15, 2018, or until filled.

 

SALARY & BENEFITS:  Grade 19.  Range begins with Step 1 = $13.82 per hour.  8.00 hours per day, 12 months per year with benefits according to the classified negotiated agreement. Employer-paid retirement, health and life insurance, sick leave benefits and personal leave.  A new classified employee may receive up to a maximum of five (5) years of previous outside work experience.  The prior position must be similar in nature and written verification of employment from the previous employer must be submitted to Human Resources upon employment. Per Administrative Regulation No. 311.1.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:  Graduation from high school or the equivalent.  A typical qualifying entrance background is completion of informal training in custodial, maintenance and storeroom operation practices, or a closely related field; or Two years of experience performing routine custodial duties; or Experience at or equivalent to experience as a Custodian in the Carson City School District, wherein the incumbent has acquired the knowledge and abilities listed below. Bilingual preferred.

 

Must be able to pass the pre-employment drug screen, physical, and lift test.

 

This is a replacement position.

Job Title: Utility Custodian

General Job Description:

Under supervision, to keep buildings, grounds and office spaces clean and orderly; to perform custodial, inventory/warehouse work and light maintenance tasks in the service of a school(s) or district buildings; and to perform related work as required. May be required to work a unique shift district-wide.

 

Experience or training required:

Knowledge of:  Basic methods, materials and equipment used in custodial work; good work habits; safe work practices; basic tools used in the routine maintenance of campus grounds and landscaped areas; basic record keeping techniques.

 

Ability to:  Maintain schedules, procedures and tools used in custodial work; work independently; effectively use cleaning materials, disinfectants and sanitizing products; maintain stock inventory records; prepare requisitions; mix and apply paint; substitute or fill in for other custodial staff, serve faculty and staff in a cooperative manner; operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective proactive relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

 

Any combination of training, education, and experience, which demonstrates an ability to perform the duties of the position:  Graduation from high school or the equivalent.  A typical qualifying entrance background is completion of informal training in custodial, maintenance and storeroom operation practices, or a closely related field; or Two years of experience performing routine custodial duties; or Experience at or equivalent to experience as a Custodian in the Carson City School District, wherein the incumbent has acquired the knowledge and abilities listed above. Licenses or Certificates required:

Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent certificate, a valid driver’s license issued by the state of residence, and an original Social Security Card.

 

The Job Functions:

This is a day and/or evening shift class of custodial work on a school or district campus.  Incumbents typically perform duties under the supervision of a custodial supervisor and/or site administrators. The following duties are typical of the positions in this class collectively, but no one position would normally include all of these duties nor is any one position necessarily limited to any one of these duties. Incumbents respond to requests from faculty and administrators during scheduled hours and maintain a small storeroom or warehouse of instructional and general supplies.  Work is generally reviewed upon completion of projects for final results.  Incumbents work with independence and are expected to refer only matters which do not fit normal procedures to the custodial supervisor and/or site administrators for instructions.

 

Essential Job Functions:

This is a day and/or evening shift class of custodial work on a school district campus and other district properties; incumbents typically perform duties under the supervision of a custodial supervisor and/or site administrators following duties are typical of the positions in this class collectively, but no one position would normally include all of these duties nor is any one position necessarily limited to any one of these duties; raise and lowers flag; lines field for games; waters planted areas; replaces ceiling tiles; sets up for special events; repairs ballasts and outlets; sweeps sidewalks; makes minor non-technical repairs to building, fixtures and replaces lights; cleans and adjusts shades and blinds, adjusts desks and other furniture; turns lights on and off; unlocks and locks doors and gates; picks up paper and debris; picks up trash containers and empties into large bins; washes walks and eating areas with hoses; delivers supplies to classrooms; changes locker combination; resets clocks; removes snow from sidewalks; delivers mail; opens, operates and maintains security of school storeroom; general warehouse work; distributes supplies to teachers; orders instructional supplies and general office supplies; assists cafeteria personnel as requested in lifting and transporting heavy supplies; counts milk cartons and other foods for accountability; paints interior and exterior surfaces and curbs; makes emergency clean-ups in classrooms; and participates in the major cleaning of the campus during the summer months; changes and cleans air filters in heating and air conditioning units; cleans grease traps; reports any malfunctions; may assist others in making repairs; cleans vandalized surfaces as necessary, including painting; reports needed repairs to the District maintenance staff; performs special custodial work when requested, operates District vehicles; fill in for other operations teammates when short-handed and performs related work as required.

While performing duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. Heavy Work – Lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling 100 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.  Will be required to use a variety of chemicals on a daily basis. May be required to wear goggles, gloves, face shields and back support occasionally.  Incumbents must be in good physical condition and must take a physical examination at the District’s expense.
